Paul Conquers His Roman Run
Congratulations to our Managing Director, Paul Harrison, for completing his charity run along the length of Hadrian’s Wall.
Raising vital funds for Leeds Cancer Centre, Paul, cheered on by family and friends, completed the gruelling 84-mile route from the east to the west coast of England in just three days.
Having initially set a goal of raising £2,500, Paul successfully smashed his target, raising almost £6,000 to date*. A huge thank you to everyone who donated.
Paul's Story
In September 2019, Paul was diagnosed with cancer. Having discovered a malignant tumour at the base of his tongue, the disease quickly spread to his lymphatic system. This required two lengthy surgeries and rounds of intense radiotherapy to remove a golf ball-sized tumour from his throat.
Thankfully, Paul, who has been part of the dental industry for over three decades, completed his treatment in February 2020, much to the delight of his family, friends and colleagues.
Having received first-rate care at the hands of clinicians and staff at the Leeds Cancer Centre, Paul made it his goal to repay the kindness and hard work shown during his treatment.
“I cannot speak highly enough of the treatment and support that I received from all the clinicians and staff at Leeds General Infirmary and St. James's Hospital Bexley Wing. I was so impressed that I decided at that time to try to raise some money, to put something back into the system that had helped me so much.”
Preparing for the Challenge
Having originally intended to run the Rome Marathon, Paul was forced to rethink his fundraising efforts following the event’s cancellation due to COVID-19. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Paul instead turned his attentions to completing an even greater task.
“In a moment of madness and in keeping with the Roman theme, I made a rash statement that I would run the Hadrian's Wall Path from the east coast to the west coast of England in three days - that's more than three marathons!” Paul explained prior to his run.
In the weeks leading up to his triple marathon medley, Paul revealed his training was going 'OK' and said that the kind comments and donations from friends, family and colleagues from the world of dentistry were 'quite overwhelming'.
Paul’s Wall Challenge
Day One
“29+ miles successfully negotiated. Didn’t get lost once. Feeling a bit sore, but ok.
“Big thanks to my support team (Debbie) and Ben, Helen and Mollie who came to support us this evening.
“The sign on the picture says it’s 1,150 miles to Rome and only 84 to Wallsend… I’ll take the Wallsend path."
Day Two
“26.5 miles today. Very steep hills (mostly up). Reached the halfway point at lunchtime. On to the last 30 miles to Newcastle tomorrow after a nice hot Epsom salt bath and early night tonight.
“Thanks go to the amazing Annie who ran with me this morning seven months after fracturing her hip in a cycling accident.
“Also big thanks to my support team, the wonderful Debbie, for keeping me fed and watered and cycling the route to raise money for cancer research.”
Day Three
“Well, we made it. 32+ miles today. I was expecting 30 miles; boy were those last two miles painful.
“Apart from the rain at the start of the day, the weather was kind. So was the terrain - it was a lot more ‘running friendly’.
“Time for a rest now. Thank you all so much for your support.”
There’s Still Time to Donate
Paul may have conquered Hadrian’s Wall, but there’s still time to donate. All donations are greatly appreciated and will help fund better treatments and potential cures for a disease that affects one in two of us.
